Living With Conditions Reese: A Normal Teenager

Our daughter, Reese, was the first Colorado baby to be caught by newborn screening for glutaric academia type 1 in August 2006. Because of this, Reese was saved. We treated her for her GA1 since birth. Reese was still affected, but only slightly compared to those not caught by newborn screening. Reese has been on a low protein diet and has been hospitalized when sick, but we have kept her safe from the seizure and damage that can be a result of GA1 when left untreated.

Reese has a mild physical disability and used a walker until she was about 11 years old. But now, she just uses a 3-wheel stand-up scooter to go around the neighborhood and walks when she's at school. She has some issues with balance and her walking is laborious. But she is 100 % fine cognitively, can eat, can use the bathroom, has friends, and is like any other 13 year old. She could not be any happier and any more determined of a child.
